I'm installing Red Hat 7.2 on an older system and have a problem with how long the install is taking. The machine is a Celeron 300A with 64 Mb of RAM, a Quantum Fireball 6.4 Gig drive, and a 32x CD drive. I've tried both the GUI installer and the text installer and they both take FOREVER. I mean like I leave it overnight and it's still not installed 8 hours later kind of forever. I want to know if there is anything that I'm doing wrong, if this system is just not up to spec, or if there could be something wrong with the system. The machine previously had Win2K. I told the installer to delete all partitions and had it auto-partition for the install. The next morning when I go to see the progress only half of the packages are installed and it is still going at a snail's pace. Any ideas?

It's broken. It shouldn't take that long. I seem to recall a bug with some RH versions where the install would hang if you told it to do a badblocks check when making the filesystem. Try running through a manual install to see if that's what it is.

Thanks for the advice. I did tell RH to do a bad blocks check each time and it always hung after about 3 minutes into the install. I finally gave up and replaced the HD with one out of another machine. This time I did a manual installation and didn't tell it to check for bad blocks. I don't know if it was the other drive or the bug that you speak of but I now have a system up and running for about 72 hours now.
