How do I create a subdomain ?

Hi,
lets say my site is www.mysite.com (http://www.mysite.com)
I would like to create subdomain.mysite.com but WITHOUT an web server in the subdomain.

How can I do this please ? Which file should I edit ? What should I restart after ?
(i'm using debian/linux)

actually, if you want to do something like this, your name is john doe and you registered www.doe.com (http://www.doe.com) and want john.doe.com you set that up wherever you registered your domain.

You shouldn't have to do anything to your computer since your domain is just being pointed to your ip isnt it?
