Like I said in my title, it looks garbage. I just upgraded from 1.4 (I think) on Woody. the desktop is actually a window, all the panels are managed (have the titlebars and everything), and I just plain don't like it. Is there anywhere to dock the desktop, fixed, take out the managed toolbars (but keep the actual toolbar itself! :p) and stop that horrible 3x3 grid when dragging windows? Something tells me I've done something wrong...
that isn't gnome 2
that is twm or fvwm or one of those

It looks to me like you are running Gnome with the Twm window manager. Twm is really old so it probably doesn't understand all of the hint handling from Gnome 2. Do you have MetaCity installed?

Not sure, but I don't think so. I did what they suggested at gnome.org for woody, and used apt-get with a custom server to get gnome2. It boots up using gdm, so I think I do have it (and it reports that all gnome and gdm2 packages at highest version if I try to install again). Is there a list of window managers (that I can use with Gnome2)?

sawfish, metacity, maybe the boxes, sawfish.
the default is metacity, but metacity is weak, sawfish used to be the default so it works nicely and sawfish is as powerfull as any wm out there.
