I am building a Slackware 8.1 system kinda on the fly. I have installed the basics and have it running. I upgraded the kernel to 2.4 and now I am downloading xfree86 (which I believe to be the X Window System?) .

This is what I think I need to do....

1. Install xfree86, download and install kde base and then i should have a kde workstation? Am i missing anything?

no, sounds right to me. You just gotta make sure that you install everything you need for kde, and then make some minor configuration adjustments (~/.xinitrc).

I would suggest installing kde with prefix=/opt/kde so that you can easilly remove it ;-)

Well I am hosed. Tryied to start the X server and it said " PCIDATA Module does not exist" I looked and there is nothing about that in XF86Config file. I ran the sh XInstall script and it said "No support for Glibc 2.2 try 2.1 where do i get that and how do i uninstall the one i have?

What does your /var/log/XFree86.0.log say?

You shouldn't need to downgrade you glibc. What's the Xinstall script anywase? Are you compiling the XFree86 sources yourself? what did your hosts.def look like?

Have you already installed KDE? (if not, wait till you get X working to do that)
