I have an old 486 laying around that I want to install Linux on (distro dosen't matter). However I can't seem to find any documentation or recommendations for installing on such an old box. Everything I read states that linux will work on everything from 2\3\486 and up, but the vendors sites (red hat, mandrake, etc.) now have much larger system requirements. Can anyone point me to a distro for 486's? I would like to run an x-windows config, but it isn't necessary. Just want to learn....

Thanks
Mike

Many distros will run on a system like this, but their system requirements are based on a default Workstation type install. Running a custom install and installing more basic items will work. XWindows may work if you have enough ram (I would recommend 32m as a bare min., 64 and up prefered), but it will not be fast. I was running a copy of Red Hat 5.2 on a 486 with 16mb of ram and X, and it was slow in X. (Don't use Red Hat 5.2, it's old and many consider it to be one of the worst that Red Hat released) Hope this helps.
