Ok, i have done a forum search, and i have checked out similar problems...
in fact refer to http://www.linuxnewbie.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=77331

this guy has the same card as me, the ac97 on board sound, but its the only sound card in my machine... mandrake 9.0 has no sndconfig, used harddrake... told me the driver is installed: ICH2 810 Chipset AC'97 Audio Controller

but i play sound with xmms and it plays too quickly on the progress bar, no sound coming out... i HAVE checked the mixer, volume set correctly.

also i get a message saying 'arts soundserver crash cpu overload' (not a copy and paste, just from memory)

if theres anyone out there who has the same sound chip and has got it working, id really appreciate some help, something of a newbie here, i have used linux in the past (suse 6.2... setting up sound on that was hassle too, different scard), but still pretty lost.

ive been to the avance website, got the linux drivers, havent compiled them but they're made by ALSA so i think are installed already... if theres any more info that could help diagnose the problem tell me and ill get it!

Do you have plug n play disabled in the BIOS??

With xmms, under Options-->Preferences, try a different output plugin. Arts. esound, etc. Many people have the played to quickly MP3 and that usually sorts it out.

Can you play a wav file. I suspect you can, and you are actually having an XMMS problem.

ok theres two things i did at the same time, not sure which one fixed it...

first i went to alsa-project.org (i think thats the address) and copied their modules.conf settings for ac97 to my modules.conf after deleting the mandrake made part... then i perused the mandrake control centre sound module options and found on relating to spdif enabling.
what with my card not supporting spdif, i sent a 0 command to it, then tested sound and it all works, regardless of plugin (tho on login i still get the arts server giving me some grief about suid? either way ill try and fix that later... now ive got to get my wireless usb intellimouse explorer working, and i refuse to get a usb-ps2 converter, cos it worked perfectly during the install process, so theres just something amiss, somewhere... if anyone knows how to get it working ill leave another more specific post on this forum.

cheers for the advice mates!
