I've been having some problems for a while now and I think I finally know the root of the problem. It seems that linux doesn't recognize the software that's already installed. I tried to upgrade rpm but it complained about patch which I know is installed and recent enough. I downloaded patch and tried to install it but it complained about libc which I also know is installed. I downloaded it and tried to install but it complained that basesystem was missing. I tried that one but it complained about filesystem and something else. It's pretty obvious that these are installed but they're not recognized. Could someone help me find the solution to this problem? Assistance is appreciated.

Considering the information you have already supplied I don't think I can help you directly, but perhaps some considerate person here can help if you give a little more specific information such as: your Linux distribution, the type/name of package/software you are trying to install, and what specific steps you have taken so far

Man, I never would have though I'd post something like this (since my Linux beginnings were in RedHat), but if dependencies have gotten you down - use Debian instead. Until RedHat gets the new and improved rpms out there (which they should have made backwards-compatible, I would have thought), it will always be full of dependency annoyances.

As for the extra information, my distro is Suse 7.0. I was originally trying to install licq but I have a feeling that it's not going to install much of anything else. The funny thing is that it tells me that it needs certain dependencies, but they're already there. For instance, upgrading rpm required that I have patch 2.5. But when I tried to install patch 2.5, it said that this would be a downgrade on my system. I tried upgrading rpm with the --nodeps option but now it doesn't even want to execute. All the dependencies exist, it just won't acknoledge them. And by the way, I accidently erased my lib directory last night so I reinstalled yet the problem still exists. I'm thinking of taking Strike's advice and running to the store for Debian. This installation just isn't working for me.
