Could some please explain why I can't edit the main menu in Redhat 8. All I want to do is change the locations and contents of the sub menus.

I tried running nautilus as root and then going to start here.. but although it looked promising it didn't work. Actually even if somebody could tell me where the configureation file for the menu is located I will edit it there.

I get the feeling that I am missing some fundimental point.

Many thanks
PEter

If I could expand on the question, I am also curious as to where those configuration files are - I wanted to set up a skeleton dummy user who only has access to a few things, and can't right click on the panel to get the entire menu, either. Basically, a couple of programs on the desktop, and the ability to logout. It would be nice to create a group that only has this, and then add users to the group.

Thank You,
The Duck

Go to /usr/share/applications

Every file in there is an entry in your Gnome menu. Yes, I'm serious. Take a look at one of them and try to decipher how to make your own menu entries. I figured out how, except I still can't quite figure out how to determine if a new program should go in, say Accessories, or Games. That part of the file still confuses me.

Yes, this is absolutely ludicrous that you have to do this to edit the menus, though I should say it's not Redhat's fault, it's Gnome's!

Thank you for your help, Jomboni - I'm looking at it right now, and it definitely is interesting...

Thanks again!

yep it works for me.
Although I have to agree the desintation menu location is a bit cryptic.
You know I must have spent at least 3~4 hours trying different google searches on this problem. to no avail.

Thanks again.
