"*already hearing apt-get ringing in my ears " pretty much answered your own question. also they have some political thing with their distro about everything in it is "free" (all/most of the stuff is GPL) thats why it took a while to get kde in it or something. anyways try slack and you wont look back.

Beware false prophets. If God used slack he wouldn't have time to do anything but compile

Debian will remain free. Debian's social contract (http://www.debian.org/social_contract)

The best package management of any OS. Never reinstall again and stay up to date.

Install the base system then add what you want or need. NO BLOAT.

Some of the best support availible. Debian support (http://www.debian.org/support)

When I was a newbie, the first distro I tried was RedHat 5.2. I thought to myself "What's good about this?" Then I tried Mandrake 7.0 and though, "Mmm. Okay, this isn't so bad but nothing special."
Then I tried Storm "Rain" release. I didn't know what debian was from a ice-dam but, after about a day I said "Wow!"
Shortly thereafter, I installed pure Debian.
I'm glad I read up a little before going into the installation and boy was it worth it.
Honestly, I have since tried Slack (pretty good but...) and the plethora of rpm-based distros (bleck!) and have realized that Debian is truly what a powerful, stable, flexible OS is supposed to be.
Sure, apt-get is beautiful. But the system as a whole makes sense. It's hard to explain but, once yo uexplore Debian a bit, you'll understand. It just makes sense.

Ok, we know that apt-get is great and helps to stay up to date blah blah blah.

As Rod said, the nature of the distribution being free is why it is so attractive. You are not feeding a company who ends up turning out with record proffits and you are helping show support for free software. YOu also get a totally stable, powerful and secure distribution, with a good learning curve. There is X on the side if you wish, which is another good thing. You are not shoved with a GUI immediately from the beginning of installation which also gives you more time to correctly configure graphics and sound hardware, as well as other peripherals. All, or most of this being done by hand so it is to your liking and to the best performance for the device.

Try it, use it, love it! I know you will, so do many people on this board.

Good luck with it.
Of course, we are also here to help if you need it.

I was once a Slack user. When I installed Debian, I never ever looked back
