maybe someone here can shed some light on whether i've been having a filesystem problem or a hardware problem..

problem: after about a month after installing redhat 6.2 on my eMachine (i know i know, immediately one assumes a hardware problem, but read on) i begin getting I/O errors while reading from / writing to the hard disk. altho i *am* able to read from and write to the hard disk, there's just a bit of a pause as the error is encountered and spit to the terminal.

the error looks much like this one:
hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hda: read_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=1547790, sector=246462
end_request: I/O error. dev 03:07 (hda), sector 246460

my reasoning for believing it may be a filesystem problem is that a reinstall of redhat 6.2 does curtail the problem for another 30 to 40 days. but it reappears, and once it does i know that i cannot reboot my machine, for a kernel panic is garunteed on bootup from that point on.

however, i've had redhat 6.2 installed on another machine and a laptop without any problems. so it is specific to my eMachine, which now has Slackware 8.0 installed on it, with a 12d 1h 4m uptime and counting :eek:

iyho, can i expect to see the problem again? i'm still using a 2.2 kernel and ext2fs, and all the same hardware in the machine.

Me thinks your problem is related to hardware, in this case either the drive itself or your ide controller/ribbon.Check first that all the connections between your hard disk and mainboard are ok...if that does not help try using another ide cable...if still problems then try switching your drive to other channel and see if you get error, if you do then your onboard ider controller is shot.

BTW, are you overclocking? sometimes these can be caused by overclocking,overheating or even bad memory chips.Hope this helps

Diffie,

i'm not overclocking it, so i hope it's not a heat problem. but you've given me a lot of different areas to check if the problem reoccures.

i can build a machine from parts but i don't know the first thing about troubleshooting hardware.

thank you for the help diffie :)
