What debian packages are there for movie playing? I don't want to compile from scratch because I'm lazy lol :)

I do need support for a large variety of movie types however.

apt-get install ogle-gui xine-ui

there are packages for mplayer if you add the following to your /etc/apt/sources.list :

deb http://marillat.free.fr/ stable main

(you can replace stable with unstable if you are running unstable)

I personally like to use dselect instead of apt-get. Same result, but I can see everything installed and all the dependacies with dselect. Easy to purge packages too. Just an opinion.

I hate dselect, I'm a big fan of apt ;).

Anyways, mplayer vs. xine. Which will do better? I'm on a fast machine with an extremely ****ty video card, and I'm looking for support for a WIDE range of video files.

Mplayer or ogle worked better for dvds for me, but xine has a divx plugin. And xine can do dvds, just I never put the effort into it.

I'm actually not really concerned with DVDs, I care more about divx 3 divx4 mpeg various avis, asf etc

I have heard some good things about xine, not sure
it plays all the windows formats though.
As for downloading, try synaptic, a nice download mgr
apt-get install synaptic

I'm all set on downloading, I just need a player that has support for a lot of formats. I've used mplayer before so I guess I will just add the source to my apt list (I had compiled it from scratch before). Maybe the apt source will have compatibility for more types of files.

Here's a hint for those with debian:

to play .asf .wma and .avi files - (very common in windows) this is what you have to do:

add these 2 lines to your apt source.list file (/etc/apt/source.list)

deb http://mplayer.nmeos.net stable/
deb http://marillat.free.fr/ stable maindeb deb

open synaptic

search for avifile and select all the packages that start with that name (they are 7)

Once the installation finishes open any .asf .wma or.avi file with this player and it will work, with sound!!! (it is basic player but it works)

so mplayer + the avifile package will pretty much give me all the support that I'll need.

Cool thanks.

tip for debian peeps.

log onto the debian support channel on irc and /msg the apt bot :) it knows lots of stuff.

for example:

/msg apt mplayer

gives you this:

<apt> extra, extra, read all about it, mplayer is at http://www.mplayerhq.hu/; download the source and build your own .deb with just one command in the source directory: "fakeroot debian/rules binary"; you may need to install libpng2-dev and libgtk1.2-dev first,libsdl1.2-dev if you want SDL support, or see http://marillat.free.fr/ for sources.list, or able to play Sorenson Video 3 without libwine now!
