Samba workgroup across subnets

Is it possinle to have a workgroup across two subnets while using only one samba box acting as a wins server? All the documentation I have been able to find about a workgroup across subnets with samba always include a samba WINS server on each side of the subnet. If I search for a machine on the other subnet I can find it, but it does not appear in net neighborhood on the windows machines. Any ideas? Thanks.
