One of the features of Mandrake is that it is compiled for x86 pentium class or higher processors. Does this feature give it a performace edge over RH? I want to be able to run a dedicated UnrealTournament server in linux and I want to get the most CPU cycle bang for my bucks.

1.)So should I use Mandrake or RH? Those are the two distros that I am most comfortable with.

2.) Should I use the new 2.4 kernel? Are there any improvements worth the effort or am I just not informed?

3.) How does one go about removing (what I deem) unneccessary portions/modules in linux? Such as the loading of the APM daemon module? Or the lpd daemon? I don't need power management nor do I have a printer either?

Thanks ahead of time,
James

1.) Mandrake's optimizations only really make a difference with CPU-bound programs like gzip, bzip2, and maybe some window managers. If you're going to run a UT server, you're not going to be running anything else that'll put any strain on the CPU.

3.) The Securing your home Linux system NHF (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/security/securehome.html) tells you how to edit the /etc/inetd.conf file.

I would go mandrake over redhat. Make sure to kill X before you run the server though, its a resource hog. And mandrake would be a bit faster because the kernel is already compiled for 586+ .. Redhats is only compiled for 386.. ?

For now I am gonna go with RH 7.0, I have RH6.2 & 7.0 and Mandrake 7.2 so I can go back between them as necessary.

I want to try RH 7.0 with the new 2.4 kernel.

Thanks,
James
