I have ran sndconfig, I have ran harddrake, both let me select the sblive, and it is even default because it auto-detects it, but I hear no sound! I have given persmissions to all users for sound and such, and still nothing... when it tests, it plays the "8 bit sample" and I hear nothing, but I get no errors. Anybody know of a way to manually setup the sound card?

chmod 0777 /dev/dsp
Run that in a console...

I have done that... I have no sound in root, or as any user.... so I can tell u that I know that isn't the problem

I know this sounds stupid, but I've seen it happen before...
speakers are on? volume is turned up?
Otherwise, I would've expected some sort of errors to come up if it weren't either of the above.

Is plug and play disabled in your bios? It should be.

Check this out (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/soundcards/sblive.html) This is what I used to get mine working, and it wasn't detected at startup for some reason, at least it said it didn't because it played my MP3's

I've always had best luck with getting the latest kernel and just compiling in support for my SB Lives...

1) Open your mixer and make sure the volumes are UP! This has happened to me. If you aren't getting any errors, then that must be the problem. If you get an error when trying to open it, usually it means that you have either not set it up or have not chmod 777 /dev/dsp (which only really needs to be done in slack)
2) If you do all that and it doesnt work and you got the error....try insmod emu10k1 and see if you get an error. If so, tell us, or try this other stuff:
1) Play with the Plug and Play setting in your BIOS cause it can make weird things magically work
2) Recompile your Driver (make, make install)
and make sure you get NO errors
3) make sure you chmod 777 /dev/dsp
4) If NONE of that works, last resort is to download the latest snapshot of the source...@ opensource.creative.com
If you STILL have the problem, then download the latest kernel, even though that sounds a little extreme to me. Who knows
I have been using my SB Live! for over a year in Linux with every distro....dont know what your problem could be....because well, it could be a lot of things :)
BTW, The little 8bit sound is of Linus Torvalds talking and is hard to hear anyway....

I did the "insmod snd-emu10k1" and got a whole bunch of unresolved_symbol errors...
snd-emu10k1, not emu10k1, but same thing, different name I think... caused by mandrake 7.2
jbstew32
02-14-2001, 04:13 PM
ok then I know what that probably means. Try this:
rmmod sound
insmod soundcore
insmod emu10k1
that should do it....you may want to try and compile an updated driver from opensource.creative.com

none of that worked either... I talked to a guy I know who knows a lot about the OS, and he said that the Sound Blaster cards have problems if you have a lot of stuff in the system... which I do... and he said to try and put it on IRQ 10... I understand all of that, except I don't know where I can set my IRQ for the card, any body know where I can do that?

You can try in the bios, but usually you are limited to trying it on a different physical PCI slot.
If you are getting unresolved symbols then your modules are not compiled right.
Either A)compile a new kernel or B)download the updated driver source from http://opensource.creative.com and compile it. I remember I had to edit the makefile to get it to compile in MDK7.2.
OH And go into your BIOS and make sure PNP is turned off. That is the most likely cause of the emu10k1 drivers not working.

the SB Live install normally goes quite smooth. It may very well be an IRQ conflict that is causing problems. The only way to fix that is to move the slots (unless you go into your bios and do it manually, but then you have to set IRQ's for everything and it can get nasty)
jrbush82
02-16-2001, 03:47 PM
Okay, I have tried moving it to every slot, should I remove the driver first then move it, then reinstall it? Another thing, I thinkt hat Linux Mandrake 7.2 automatically detects it and installs the snd-emu10k1 mod file and loads it at start-up... anybody know of a way to stopt that?

I've loaded up the bios also, and I can't do hardly crap in that.. I'm using a Gateway 2K system... So I'm not able to turn off Plug-N-Play if its in there (which it should be).

I suspect that you have 'set modversions' (i think that's what it's called) set to 'y' in your kernel settings. try changing that to 'n'.

forget these solutions.E-mail gateway and tell them you use linux and you want to know who makes your m/b so you can flash the bios with a generic one.If they dont give you an answer tell them you will post to zdnet or cnet with your dissatisfaction. The sb live is an easy install ever since the drivers were released 2 years ago.Your problems are hardware related and no fault of Linux or your distro.

I know exactly what kind of mother board I got... they have a pic and all of it on the gw2k site, heh... I'm not to sure what flashing it is.. but I wouldn't mind finding out.

seen the pic and it dont tell me who makes your m/b.the next time you boot up hit pause screen and write down the bios id code at the bottom of your screen and post it here.

hiyas,
if you are using the stock Digital speakers from Gateway (i think the ones in question are the Boston Acoustic 735), then i would have to agree with ssadams for the most part on this one. from what i've seen on the mailing lists about Gateways, the sblive they bundle seems to be a special OEM one only made for Gateway. The quirk in this card is that (taken from a mailing list post):
one of the analog outs(front?) also doubles as a digital out, and the special Windows drivers are needed to switch between the 2 modes (the power-on default is analog mode and these systems are sold with digital speakers, doh). It's unknown how this is done, and people reached at so far creative/gateway don't seem to know anything about this.
basically what this means is that you aren't hearing anything because your output is in analog while your speakers will only input/ouptut digital signals. please reference the emu-10k1 mailing lists for more info:
http://opensource.creative.com/pipermail/emu10k1-devel/
Side: all those that say to grab the latest emu-10k1 module from the creative site. please note that this is the same driver from before 2.4 was released. (ie. almost 2 months old already). this may finally change with a bass/treble patch finally checked into the cvs tree. i may -co the cvs and give it a try and let y'all know if its worth it...
hope this helps,
cheers

well that flippin sux... why can't computer distributors just build them and sell them without any special crap that they want to add themselves. err.. building next time.. gonna call up gateway and see if they know anything about this.

so from this digital problem, has anybody heard of this, and know a solution?

THAT'S the main advantage of building your own machines. I don't recommend to anybody I know to buy a name brand because even though they say otherwise some of their parts are somewhat propietary in nature and thus cause problems eventually. I hope you can get your problem resolved. One thing you could do is find some regular analog speakers and try them out first and see if that works.

thats why when I bought the system, that I told em I didn't want anything integrated and all that crap, and I told him the specifics... but they had to go and change the SBLive! Value card to something of theirs... tomorrow I'll call up and see if I can't get a refund for what I paid on the card specifically, and buy a regular verison of it myself and put it in the system. :)
I'll keep u all posted since this seems to be a big topic, heh
jrbush82
02-18-2001, 10:59 AM
okay, well I called em up, and since it has been more than 30 days, they can't refund or do crap at all for me. So what I'm going to do is buy a new one, that isn't from gateway, and sell the gateway oem on ebay :) What card can I get excactly? Any sound blaster live! card? x-gamer, mp3+, value, etc...

All of those are exactly the SAME! The only difference is software bundle and such. The only one that is different is the platinum (i think) because it has another panel that actually takes up a bay in the front of your computer (pretty cool but expensive). I personally have the SB Live Value and I love. I don't miss the extra little attachment that comes with the regular live (and it saved me a pretty penny :)
If you want a good bundle of software, look into the X-Gamer or MP3 versions.

all I really want is the card, the sblive! value, but all I can seem to find is the x-gamer and mp3+ and the platinum, anybody know where I can get just the basic sblive value card?
jrbush82
02-18-2001, 02:56 PM
u think before buying a new card, I should try a different distro? even though I've heard the gateway oem of the sblive! doesn't work, would it be worth it?

02-18-2001, 05:29 PM
Okay, I've decided to buy a new SBLive! Card for sure... Online I see a lot of the OEM versions, which I think is what I have... I want retail version correct?
jbstew32
02-18-2001, 05:56 PM
mine is oem and it works. The reason yours doesnt is because it was specially made for gateway to use in their computers. I bet that you could by an OEM and be just fine, but I would recommend that you get retail. With retail, you get warranty, tech support, software, etc... and its not THAT much more

Well I've ordered a new SBLive! Value MP3+ with 5.1 dolby digital surround sound ;)
here is the url, if you see anything on why this wouldn't work, tell me and I'll cancel the order ;)
