My X has some problems with my new monitor.

Once upon the time, I had my computer having an NEC monitor with Linux and windows. Things were fine.

One day, the monitor died. I went to buy a second-hand monitor. Comparing with the NEC monitor, it was not as good, but it could function.

It worked fine with windows, but when I type "startx" or "xinit", the screen went crazy. I typed "Ctrl-Alt-Backspace" to get out.

How can I solve this problem? And why does this problem occur? I tried to lower the vertical and horizontal refresh rate in XF86Config, but it didn't help.

Hacking the horizontal sync and vertical refresh rates is indeed what you need to do. You just have to get the right numbers.

Refer to your monitor's manual. It'll tell you the rates the monitor can support. If you don't have the manual, search for tech docs on google.com or the manufacturer's site.

The sync range is usually just given and you can type it in directly, eg 31-70. Refresh rate is easy. If your monitor can do 60Hz at its highest resolution and 120 at its lowest then you write 60-120.

You can also use windows to get that information. Click on settings/control panel/display and copy the information you find there. Then boot into your linux partition and reconfigure your video to match.
