When I try to log into GNOME, I get the following error message:

"Could not look up internet address for smirnoof.stduent.cwru.edu. This will prevent GNOME from operating correctly. It may be possible to correct the problem by adding smirnoff.student.cwru.edu to the file /etc/hosts"

It asks me if I want to log on anyway or try again. Try again does nothing so I log in. When I try to open Mozilla it then brings up the "Select User Profile" dialog box and when I try to open Mozilla w/ "default" it says I can't because it's already in use. I would think it was an internet access problem, but GAIM still works and if I log onto KDE everything, including Mozilla, works fine. I tried restarting X and restarting the computer itself but neither works.

Any idea what these errors mean and how I can go about fixing them??

I got the same error when using Gnome 1.4, and hadn't set up my network yet.

Did it just start doing this, or has it done it from the begining? Also, have you tried adding that to /etc/hosts?

It just happened today...but soon after my school's network crashed...so that may have contributed to the problem. I'm going to try adding that stuff to /etc/hosts and see what happens.

yeah I have the same error message when I start up gnome as well, but it doesn't seem to actually affect anything. I tried adding it to /etc/hosts but nothing really changed. I would like to get rid of this error, just so that the annoying message doesn't slow down startx, but it is not my top priority at the moment ;)
