mozilla binary

Question: Why would Mozilla package a binary in a gzipped tar file.

I d/l mozilla 1.2b to '/usr/local' Then untarred. I made a link on the desktop to '/usr/local/mozilla', clicked the icon, and it started! No configuring, makefile or install. I thought for sure it would bark back at me (I like to try and break things so i can fix them). Is this normal practice?

BTW: I'm using Mandrake 9.0 with all the current updates I could find

hehe, there is a source code for mozilla, and it it very hard to compile. I tried that several times with no luck, spent about 1 hours of CPU time just to get a compile error message.
