bad video in GUI

I am totally new to Linux-I installed Mandrake 9.0 on an older Pentium that is dual booting with Win 2k pro. During install I could not get any graphic interface to work. Ironically the Install programs GUI worked fine but I could not set up any type of Xwin enviroment all I get is garbage on the screen.

I selected the same parameters as Windows uses:Cirrus Logic 5434 compatible driver, 256 colors 800x600 pixels 60hz. I also tried some other settings but no luck.

Any help would be muchly appriceated.

Mandrake 9.0 might not be the best OS for that older computer. mandrake 9.0 is for the new computers. if you can try 8.1 0r 8.2 you might get better results:D

Have a look through /var/log/XFree86.0.log for any errors.

grep EE /var/log/XFree86.0.log
or
less /var/log/XFree86.0.log
