Distro: Mandrake 8.1
Medium: FTP ISO
Problem: Disc 2 of 2 possibly corrupted
Symptoms: over two dozen "problems with installation of [x] package. Go on?" [enter]

Weary Query 1a: Is it possible to spend 3 hours on an ADSL connection trying to download a ~650MB ISO and end up with a corrupt image? Several times in a row, for both discs, from different servers? This is in spite of correct checksum, in the case of the Norway site for example. (Is it a coincidence that Norway's checksum is different from the one at www.linuxiso.org (http://www.linuxiso.org)???)

Weary Query 1b: Is it possible that the latest Net Worm is wreaking havoc among the worldwide Linux distro servers?

Weary Query 2a: Is it worthwhile to take note of the exact names of the two dozen-odd packages which fail installation, then try to install them individually later?

Weary Query 2b: Is it MORE worthwhile to shell out for the commercial boxed release, in order to avoid the above complications or worse?

In the spirit of RTFM I have printed out the 211 pages of English-language .PDF manual downloaded from Mandrake's website, but although pretty honest it doesn't cover this sort of garbage. Meanwhile the prospect of manual installation for each of two dozen packages is daunting as I have not yet grasped the language of text-mode commands in Linux. :-(

do an md5sum on the iso files, they should match up with the md5sum file where you downloaded it from. If you only have windows available to you, just a search on google for "md5sum windows" or something like that and you'll find a copy for windows pretty quick. This will tell you if the iso's are corrupted or not.

The worm mentioned in the media right now only effect windows, or IIS which usually runs on windows. Won't effect Linux at all.

Note that Mandrake 8.1 is at rc1 so it's not final, you could be running into problems because of this.

Hey! I see there's a bunch of helpful Canadians in these forums... :-)

Thanks, but as I tried to state in my initial post, I alreayd matched md5sums from the Norway ISO. Also, I wondered why the md5sum posted at www.linuxiso.org (http://www.linuxiso.org) was different.

(Are md5sums absolutely fool-proof?)

Thanks for the reassurance. So does it follow that all servers offering Linux ISO's do not run Windows, but only Linux instead? :-)

I sent a message to Mandrake quality control, hoping to get a reply on exactly that topic... God only knows when or if that will happen.

Thanks for the reply.
