Over the past week, I've posted a dozen or so messages about my problems trying to install Mandrake 9.0. I've been wanting to experiment with Linux for a while now, and chose Mandrake on the back of some positive reviews.

However, the gods have conspired so that Mandrake cannot be installed on my pc. The installation program fails every time:

During the installation, I get a message saying <thepackage>.i586.rpm can't be found & asks if I would like to continue. When I press yes, every other package fails in the same way.

I've tried:

- installing from my hard drive (all partitions)
- disabling UDMA on my hard drives
- checking the iso using md5sum (they match)
- the minimum installation
- varying the packages
- unplugging my second hard drive

...all with no joy. On the off chance that I had downloaded 4 dodgy iso files, I even bought PCW magazine (which had Mandrake on the coverdisc) and tried to install it.

What can I try next (satan worshipping aside)?????

So how many of the Mandrake 9.0 cd's do you have? Just CD 1? If so, you may be trying to installing packages that you don't have.

I've got all three - and the cds are all OK. I've checked the md5sum and even used the isos on the PCW DVD disc.

As far as the packages go, I tried deselecting everything I could (even KDE and GNOME) and the damn thing still failed.

aaarrghhhhh

Try changing different bios settings. Disable power management in the bios.

Some install options you can try...

Mandrake may have a list of others on their site or perhaps in the readme's on the installation cd.

in some bios there is a setting for software control of your cpu's speed ive heard of that causing problems more than likely your problem is in your bios

If it says it can't find it, you possibly have a bad burn.

I agree with John, can't find <thepackage>.i586.rpm is a bad burn a dirty disk or dirty drive.

Ditto with the previous posts, it sounds as though you may have one or more bad installation media. It happens more often than you may think. Try burning at a slower speed, make sure you have all the correct burn parameters selected to make bootable media from an iso.

Make cd 1 bootable, and 2,3 do not need to be bootable. The first two cds run close to the maximum capacity for 700 mbyte cds.
cd1-694.6Mb, cd2-699.6MB, cd3-only 456.3Mb.
