Hello everyone, I am thinking about buying a new laptop. More than likely it will be a cheap Toshiba around a $1,000. I was wondering what would be the chance of Linux working with the most of the hardware after I remove Windows Millennium. I would like to put Slackware 7.1 on it.
Here is a link to the laptop I'm thinking about, http://www.bestbuy.com/detail.asp?e=11027501&m=488&cat=494&scat=495
Take a look at the specs and tell me what you think.

Looks like it would work pretty well, except for the modem...
Here's a link to someone else's experience installing RH 7.0 on one of these: http://www.shaka.com/~linuxjr/laptop.html

goto http://www.google.com/linux and search for Linux on Laptops. That should keep you busy for a awhile. There are plenty of compatability lists, how-tos and personal observations out there.
I have solved everyone of my laptop problems using that search tool.
Long live Google! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

I bought an Inspiron 5000e from Dell last year with Windows 98SE on it. This year I decided to put Mandrake on the thing; didn't work. I bought RedHat 7.0 (boxed) because Dell and RedHat have become "partners", and it all works fine (except the WinModem, obviously). I didn't have to do any tweaking, or visit any forums etc. It just worked!
Anyway, Dell do some Laptops now under $1000 (at least in the UK), so have a look there too. I know for a fact that IBM laptops also install well with Linux, so there's two ideas..AND I also know that Sony Laptops aren't too bad either.
Hope that helps!
