how do i configure WINE

okay another newbie question thats probably been asked a dozen times. how do i configure WINE to work? Heres my setup.

Pentium 4 1500Mhz 256MB ram 2 harddrives.
Running Mandrake linux 9 on Drive #2 and Windows XP on drive #1.

I would like to get wine to work so i can use Internet Explorer as well as Microsoft Money.

Unfortunately When i goto chat at chat.msn.com it doesn't let me because im not using Windoze, And quite honestly i haven't found a personal Finance program worth while for linux. I've tried Kmoney and gnucash and they just don't do it for me.

If this is possible please let me know. Out of curiosity i did the following... and here is my response

Invalid path 'multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\Windows' for windows directory: does not exist
Perhaps you have not properly edited or created your Wine configuration file.
This is (supposed to be) '/home/steve/.wine/config'

Did you install the rpm? or compiled? There should be a script called wineconfig or winesetup(Im not on my linux box and I'm a tab junkie). Just type wine then hit tab and see whats available. Its a graphical setup utility. I suggest going with fake_windows instead of messing with your actual install. This way if you screw up you haven't really hurt anything. The main things are to check and make sure when it probes is that it locates your drives correctly. C: will be the fake_windows, X: is usally your linux partition, and the others I will have to check when I get home. I don't remeber there being any unusal questions, so try it and post any probs and I can give you a better response.

okay I Think I got it configured somewhat. When i type:

wine notepad

i get a new window with notepad in it. But when i type wine iexplore.exe i get the following:

[steve@phoenix steve]$ wine iexplore.exe
/usr/bin/wine.bin: cannot find 'iexplore.exe'

any more suggestions.

I don't think Internet Explorer will work with wine....seem to remember seeing a post before on this without a solution. Have you tried galeon or mozilla? Once you get used to tabs and smart bookmarks, you won't want to go back to IE.

i've tried Galeon and Mozilla. as well as konquerer, They're all great (except for mozilla .. IMHO) I just need IE so i can go to the stupid msn chat is all.....

If all you want to do is use msn messanger then try amsn or gaim. Both work fine. As far as running ie in wine, I have tried before with no luck. There are older posts on this topic you might want to do a search on ie and wine.

the free wine cant run IE. but codeweavers office can run it and many other windows programs very nicely. http://codeweavers.com

I have run Internet Explorer 5.5 from within wine, and it does work somewhat. If you try and look through your favorites or Internet options, it kills the program. Very unstable, but can be used somewhat. I think Opera or Mozilla would be better.

my internet options works perfect and favorites dont work but it dont crash ie.
