Hi
Can anybody spare a couple of minutes to fill in an incredibly frustrating gap in my knowledge? I'm a newbie who's experienced in Windows (I work in IT).
How does X handle fonts? I believe xfs is geared up to handle bitmap fonts as well as true type but I've read the man pages and it doesn't mention ttf. In fact, the man pages are geared to running xfs literally as a server across a network. I'm just running it locally so I can have Arial in X, for example.
Do true type fonts have to be rendered into bitmap prior to X starting? How is printing handled? I beleive you use a printer server but how is what's on the screen in your word processor matched up with what is sent to the printer? Is this the task of the word processor or the desktop/windows manager (or the job of the app)?
Do applications have their own sets of fonts or will they use xfs? Why does StarOffice have some fonts that don't seem to be accessible within Opera?
As I said, if anybody can help it would be appreciated. I realise I'm doing a lot of comparrison with Windows, which is bad, but it's the only foothold I have.
If there's an online or even local resource I should have read first then please direct me toward it - I'm keen to learn.
