Hi, hope this is the right place to ask about this (I think it is, cos I've found answers to the other 7 networking questions I had).

Hopefully, this is dead simple. I've got a dead simple network to which I've connected a Mandrake 9.0 machine. Most of the time, the machine can "see" the rest of the network, and the internet with no problem, so I can surf/mail/download etc quite happily.

But sometimes the network connection slows to a crawl and then dies completely. I can't see any pattern to the symptoms - sometimes it happens several times in an hour, other times, I've left it downloading stuff and gone to dinner.

When it starts to happen, I can fire off a "ping www.ntlworld.com" and watch the pings time increase until I start losing packets. I can do the same for the local internet gateway (a smoothwall machine). After a minute of this, it starts throwing out "destination unreachable". The reverse is true - I can watch the pings from the gateway and other machines slow down and die.

Now, I get a choice when this starts. I can either wait and see if the connection comes back up - which usually takes between 1 and 5 minutes (sometimes longer though) or I can just do
ifdown eth0
ifup eth0
and it's fine.

It looks to me (and Tiomera, who helped me get the thing working in the first place) like something is overloading the network connection, but I can't work out what.

The problem is that I don't know where to start looking for more info - syslog is only showing the ifdown/up results and lsof doesn't report anything unexpected on files opened by network activity.

The machine isn't anything unusual - average desktop, no overclocking etc, one NIC, only network apps on it are Mozilla and Evolution so far. But it dual-boots with Win2k, which doesn't exhibit the problem. Also, the other machines in the network don't have problems, so I know it must be something in the Mandrake!

Beyond that I'm lost and I'd be really grateful if anyone could tell me where to look next!
