I just installed LM7.2 about 3 days ago and got it working (everything except the damned onboard sound... even though it's supposed to work)...

But now I want to compile a new kernel for my system. Am I foolish, masochistic, or do I just have too much time on my hands?

What differences am I going to notice between my current kernel, which I think is 2.2.17 and 2.4(or should I just compile 2.4.1?)?

Will 2.4 be more likely to pick up on my on-board sound (its a Via VT82C686)?

What is the difference between comiling the kernel and say, compiling KDE2.1? What I mean is, will compiling KDE2.1 prepare me in any way for the kernel? Am I making to much of a big deal out of this? it just sounds like a hateful thing to do...

compiling software is compiling software, the only differences is that the kernel has its own way to set it up. There is a very good NHF about compiling kernels, you should check that out. About the sound... it might help, use 2.4.1 and not 2.4 and you probebly wont notice any diff between 2,2 and 2.4 unless you want to use some of the new options (like USB :)
