yes i am a complete linux newbie (be scared, very scared) . . . here's my problem . . . i'm installing Linux Mandrake 9.0 on my Toshibia Satellite 5005-S507 laptop with an NVIDIA G-Force4 440 Go and it has a 15" UXGA hi-res TFT (1600 x 1200) monitor . . . durring the installation i get to the monitor selection and screen resolution part and i, for the life in me, cannot find a setting that will please my computer so i can actually see something on my screen . . . can anyone please help me out here . . . i'm in dire need of getting past this point . . . any help at all is appreciated!

Are you able to see anything when you type startx? Is it just the resolution that's messed up?
If so, you can try to search your monitor manufacturer's site or your monitor's manuals for the refresh rates and maximum resolutions that your monitor can display. Then you simply choose whatever options Mandrake gives you when configuring based on what you got from the documentation.
If that doesn't solve your problem, make sure you are using the "nv" drivers for your G4. Those should work without 3d support with a G4, they did in Debian, which probably has slightly older drivers than Mandrake.

thankx for the help . . . i pretty much gave up with Mandrake 9 and went with Red Hat . . . seems to be a lot easier and i got a lot more support with it too from people i know . . . i do seem to be having a problem with something else though . . . it freezes when doing a loopback . . . i have to go through interactively and disable the network . . . any ideas here?
