sound cards and 3d play

quake 3

the distro
mandrake 8

the problem
when i load quake3 , it gets to the sound initalization then it says my card cant do that (exact quote from console)

this card runs q3 fine in windows. so the question is. wtf ? ;)

do i need to get updated drivers off the net or something ?

Does the sound initialization totally fail so you can't play the game with sound? If so what sound card are you using? Did you try running it as root?

i just tried as root and not dice. this is what is in the console , and i dont get it cause it wroks in windows ......
btw my card is a yamaha YMF-724f {dis-1 audio controler}

or thats atleast what linux thinks ;)
