I used to have mandrake 7.0 installed on my windows 98 system but have got a new computer since then that came with windows ME. It tells me I cant install because it needs msdos real mode which windows ME doesnt support. Is there anything I can do without partitioning my harddrive because I have no clue how to partition and I dont have the money to waste on partition magic.

My frist install was with 7.2 and ME. I didn't have a problem with it. When are you getting the error message? Durring the Linux install? or before it starts?

Have you tryed to boot directly into the linux installer?

You need to create a boot disc that supports your cd rom and then go strait to dos, thats what i heard.

I don't know if this helps, but I've got Drake 8 dual booted with ME. I booted from the CD & DrakX did the patritioning for me. It was sweet... Of course, if you're stuck on lnx4win, then you will need DOS. But I'd suggest spending $5 at linuxcentral.com (http://www.linuxcentral.com) and moving up to Drake 8.

Well the problem is only when installing mandrake lnx4win. It wont let me saying it needs real dos which windows me doesnt support. That program looks interesting lostintexas but is it safe? have you tried it? I could partition but I have no clue how to do it manually and I wont because I will just end up trashing my system and will have to reformat :)

First off, Partition Magic is NOT a waste of money. Just thought I'd get that straight.

Secondly, just go to real Linux. Lin4Win is...eh...how should I put it? Not as...good. Yeah. And like j.harrison said, Drake 8 dual booted with ME. And since you have a new computer, you should be able to boot directly from the CD.
