When Red Hat is starting up I notice that the line
Bringing up interface eth0:
it usually fails. It takes a while for it to say it.
Do I have something setup wrong?
After the fail it mentioned something about determining an IP. How do I that if that is the problem?

What is your NIC?

Sounds like your box is trying to get an IP via DHCP. Is that correct or do you wish to use a static IP address? Post the contents of your /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file. What is the BOOTPROTO= line set to? none or dhcp?
If you want to solve this yourself read here:

The nic is a 3com 3c590/3c595/3c90x/3cx980 model
BOOTPROTO=static
Now my other pc's are Windows 2000 and I can see them in the network. Should I be able to see my linux book in Windows also? I'm not sure if the IP, netmask, and networks are using the right IP address. They use 127.0.0.1,127.0.0.0,127.0.0.0. How do I check and see if my nic is working correctly?

Well if your NIC is 3com you might have to change the card to Linksys because fro some reason Linux doesn't like 3com that much. I have had quite a few people ask me what NIC they can use for linux because they have a 3com card. But that is my opinion. I might be wrong about the compatibility but then again i might be right. What do you think?

I can change the nic and just use it for a windows box. Once I change the nic, what is the best way to set it up correctly. How do I get the IP address, etc that it ask for. Also once the card is configurated correctly, will I be able to see it in Windows 2000 with the other computers in the network?

Excuse my newbieness, but how do I find out if I have DHCP or a static setup? Basically my small network has two pc's with Windows 2000 pro, two 10/100 nics and a 5 port hub with a uplink port. I did the basic configuration to get the computers to see each other:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
That's pretty much how my current Windows network is set up. So hopefully someone can tell me what kind of setup I have. My internet connection is AOL DSL. I am changing over to cable this weekend.
** After reading some info or static and dynamic IP's, I think my setup falls under DHCP since the IP changes when I log off and connect. If I am incorrect, please someone let me know. **

Can both machines get on the internet?

Yes, currently the two windows machines have access to get to the internet. I am using a Westell DSL ethernet modem with a hub. I have plugged the DSL modem to the uplink port in the hub and using port 1 and port 2 to connect to each nic. Now the third machine is the Red Hat Linux box. That also has a nic which is connected to the hub using port 3. I will be leaving DSL to go to cable this weekend so I'm not sure how things will change. Nevertheless, I wanted to get the Linux box working properly in the network and have internet access for it.

ok, all you have to do is get the nic in the Readhat box working.
what are the ip addresses of your two other machines?
Are you positive it is a hub and not a router?

Exactly. Yes it is definitely a hub. When I get home I can get the local IP addresses for the two machines. By the way, do you have e-mail?
