http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/textbox/instantaol.12-03-01.tar.gz?download

This version is the alpha "Gamera" known as Instant AOL. The source code for it was ripped out of Gateway's "Portable AOL console(touch screen) by a person named Phantasm"

to install open up a terminal untar the package, cd into the instant aol directory, and run ./install

you need wish to run the install program...

It does not dial you up to the internet, it works via tcp/ip connection so you can check your e-mail send mail chat yadda yadda , but you can't send pictures or attach files.

[user@domain] tar -zxf instantaol.12-03-01.tar.gz
[user@domain] cd instantaol
[user@domain instantaol] ./install

it is suggested that you install it into your /usr/local directory

Only hit "install files" and after running the program

if your fonts are off, you can install the libraries, and fonts to fix it.

After you install type "aol" at a command prompt

[user@domain] aol

And then you will be prompted to set up your touch screen monitor.. to get past it tab 3 times hit the space bar , space bar, space bar all the way through then sign on...

This version is known to work on Suse, and slackware. For questions or comments email phantasm@textbox.net

If it opens and keep crashing

You might need

zlib1-devel-1.1.4-3mdk

good luck!

AIM and AOL are not the samething.

And for your information, there has been aim for Linux for quite awhile now.

I looks like AIM to me, whatever is, the AIM on Mandrake did not worked for him. I know that was an AOL IM out there for Linux and never got to it. On my Slackware PC has AOL IM on Netscape installed already. Thanks for the link. I will try it. Anyway I am just still a Newbie learning Linux if I insulted someone...

As usual... You find something when you are not looking and here it is!! Dam it! If anyone is interested. Easy RPM and you get all the goodies.

The AOL IM.

isnt that an oxymoron? that goes on my oxymoron list

AOL was my first ISP so until I got DSL was using aol for about 3 years or so. So changing my e-mail addy would be a hassel now to others trying to reach me + I can get all of my mp3s from AOL faster than IRC or KAZAA :)

It may suck as an ISP but its great for what I mentioned above.

AOL on Linux... That's just wrong :-(

My penguin just lost his lunch!!!

Doesn't that cause some kind of paradox in the fabric of the space time continuim or something?

It runs and everything until I an action ( send instant message, read my mail , etc ) it basically allows me to see the welcome window..

Then I get this error

No, that isn't the AOL client ( that gets me into the chat rooms, etc... ) That is just a client that allows people who use AOL as an ISP for Dialup to connect to the internet. That is all that it does.
Thanks anyway

I heard a couple of years ago that AOL was thinking of using Linux as the base of their program--SERIOUSLY!!!!

Now, can you imagine the average AOLamer using Linux??? By and large they can't find their own @$$es with both hands & a flashlight.

I'm sorry but that's just too funny!!! heh

You mean there pos application which users use, or their servers? AOL'ers would not be able to find a big enough manual to even help them install the application, then use it? HAHAH!

Yes, I happen to know some very smart people who are forced to use AOL, my sister, for one. In UK, it's one of the best deals for internet access (unlimited access).

However, I volunteer on a tech help chat for a local ISP and believe me, the *majority* of AOL users are total a$$holes. The "questions" they pose would be a tome the size of "War & Peace" so I'd be unable to post them all here. One of the best was some idiot woman who threw away the CD with her new printer's drivers on it, insisting that it was "only advertising" from Compaq--guess what--an AOL user.

When I say that AOL is the "Slums of the Internet," it's proven to me every single day.

Lets make Earthlink one of the best deals in the UK as far as unlimited internet access or any other ISP for that matter... And the majority of your calls would then be from people using those ISPs. Then you can rant and rave about their trials and tribulations and how their ISP's are the slums of the internet.

If memory serves me correctly, I think AOL is/was interested at one point in obtaining Redhat.

Regardless, it is sad that AOL isn't more easily interfaced with Linux. There's been a few instances where I wasn't able to turn friends on to Linux because they couldn't handle the OS transition without their familiar browser.

AOL's browser is really a watered-down version of I.E.

Since they own Netscape, I'm surprised they don't use that, although I understand they just purchased it for the portal.

There are a lot of Netscape skins, and one is made to look like I.E.

I agree, but that's not what I was talking about (I should have been more clear). The problem lies in the fact that the people I mentioned obtain thier dialup access through AOL, and can't get a connection on Linux. Getting these people to change their OS and dialup service wasn't possible.

For some, it's the ONLY choice for access. I see what you mean.

There was a rumor about it last year, but was found to be just a rumor (but it might of come up some where officially, but breifly)
AOL spokesman Andrew Weinstein said the company isn't in formal negotiations or informal discussions with Research Triangle Park, N.C.-based Red Hat. A Red Hat spokeswoman declined to comment. Source story (http://www.computerworld.com/softwaretopics/os/linux/story/0,10801,67607,00.html)
With Red Hat refusing to comment says that it was thought of, but it never went past the 'rumor' stage ;)

An on about Linux users using AOL as their ISP...look at Lindows, they were the first to integrate the AOL client connecting into a Linux distro
Even Rednecks need internet access :D

I have been a long time believer that for linux to make it we can sit around and wait for the masses to come to linux, or we can bring linux to the masses. I am talking about strictly on the desktop. I think linux's server record thus far can speak for itself:cool: . I dont pay much attention to aol. I too was once an aol user, but outgrew it:p. There are some people that find the simple interface just right and therefore wont leave aol. The other comment I hear a lot is "all my friends are on aol and if Linux doesnt run it then no thank you" . I have explained and demonstrated the IM clones available for linux, but some people want their aol email (which I cannot stand) and access to their media and chat rooms. What if AOL formed an aliance with one or more linux vendors? What if they started giving out a knoppix like cd that booted them right into a linux desktop and had aol running? I think many people would jump ship from windows to linux only because they are following Aol. Aol has a knack for appealing to the masses, despite what we may think of some of their users, those users drop a lot of money on computers. I think a couple of years ago the number of AOL users was up to 26 mil. We could sure use those numbers. Honestly, that is the single most common complaint I get from people when I tell them about Linux. "Well it doesnt run AOL". Just my $0.02. Let the flames begin.

make sure you have tcl/wish installed

also make sure that you have your zlib libraries installed

You can find those libraries on your linux distribution's cds .. or at rpmfind.net

note* this version of AOL does not connect you to the internet
it only allows you to use AOL if you have a tcp/ip connection setup already....

If you have AOL as your isp.. use Pengaol to connect to the internet

**********************************************
**********************************************

Installation instructions.

download the file "instantaol.12-03-01.tar.gz" from here: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/textbox/instantaol.12-03-01.tar.gz?download

after you have downloaded "instantaol.12-03-01.tar.gz"
find where you downloaded the package and type the following commands in a terminal that are displayed in bold under this:

su ((it will then ask you for your password for root then type it in))
tar -zxf instantaol.12-03-01.tar.gz ((this untars the package))
cd instantaol ((makes you enter the instantaol directory))
./install ((runs the install script))

************************************
Then a box will come up asking where do you wish to install it.
type "/usr/local" and hit "install files", do not install libraries or fonts unless if you have problems after

************************************

open up a terminal and then type "aol"
then a screen will pop up hit your tab key 3 times then space bar, space bar, space, bar , space bar....

sign on..

Yeah, the landscape has changed considerably since the late '80s, when AOL/PC-Link was actually populated with intelligent people.
(DOS-based, Geos UI, $6.50 an hour, leased lines at work, AOL at home--it was a reasonable solution in many cases.)

Nowdays it's ::: gag-choke! :::

Then again, if AOL is all you can get, you can always proxy through the AOL-connected machine and browse from your Linux box.
