I'm having some odd problems burning CDs here. I've been trying for weeks to find what is wrong but can't find anything that helps.

When I burn a CD using Red Hat 8.0 either using Gnome Toaster or the command line, the disk burns fine without any errors. And the CD reads just fine on the same system. But I need these CDs readable and usable on other systems...

First problem is burning a CD of mp3's (I got a new CD/mp3 player for my Jeep, sweetness :D) but all the disks I've made have an odd skipping behavior on every mp3, like they are all scratched...all 170 mp3s do the same thing...

Second I made a CD of RPMs so I can update my laptap that does not have a LAN connection (broken PCMCIA) and it is unable to mount the disk because it is in an 'unrecognized format'

My guess is that it is not burning the CD in Joliet format, am I missing an option? I thought that Gnome Toaster and cdrecord in general defaulted to this...

well i can say nothing for gnometoaster but since you have to make an iso of the crud you are burning first if you are using cdrecord you need to use the -J switch as wel as the -r switch if you want Joliet capabilities using mkisofs.

Thanks Sarah...I think, sounded a bit rude though...what you consider crud might be worth something to someone else

I will have to try the mkisofs and see if that has better results. I just think something is wrong somewhere as Gnome Toaster will not set this by default. Thanks for the tip!

well it was not meant to imply what you were burning is crud. in this case it was intended as a short form for 'what ever you want to burn be it mp3's, video, audio, etc.'

in my upbringing crud has to meanings:

crud=crud/crap

or

crud = stuff as in "think i will make an iso of this crud here in my /home/sarah folder in case i need it later"

since you did not mention what mp3's you were burning how could i know it is crud? actually even if you said what it was i would not care even if i did not like it it because you are free to listen to whatever you like.

Heh, didn't need to justify yourself there :)
All in good light-hearted fun

To me...crud=junk

might have been burned with rock-ridge extensions or as some format other than iso. Check the filesystem on the cd yiour burned and check your user manual to see what types of cds it accepts.

User Manual??
Heh, this thing is almost 4 years old now and I have no idea where the manual might of wandered off to :)
It would not suprise me if it was finally giving out and going bad...
I checked the Gnome Toaster properties and it had mkisofs with -V -J and -r. Took the -V out and tried...same results. Could the Rock-Ridge added in with Joliet cause the oddball problems?

The RPM disk burned fine, it is the CD driver on the laptop that is the problem with that one...

Just banging my head on this mp3 problem...why do they skip when being played on this one system? They play fine off everything else...I even tried 3 different manufacture disks with the same results...
I made a mp3 CD in windows on the same system, that had different results (failed to close the disk properly, wierd error I can't remember) but besides that some mp3s wont play at all and the directories are broken...the mp3s play fine in the player. It has to be something with how Linux makes the disk :(

Nope, used just the -J switch and also tried one with the -r...same results.
CD works fine anywhere but in my car, and that is where I need it to work :(

darn that sucks unfortunately it is commonly car stereos that seem to be the biggest problem for burned cds.

what spped do you burn at? have you tried burning at 4x? yes i know it is slooow but it could make a difference. i have had to do that with ripped dvds before in order to get them to work.

Heh, 4x is the max speed of this thing :D

I have tried buring at 2x but that seemed to have the same results.
Yes, car stereos are the most picky with this stuff as they are the only thing that gives me any problems :p

It bums me that I can burn on in Windows on the same system but not Linux...I am open to more suggestions on this, as I have about 30 disks left :D

sounds like some sort of linux buring thing for sure. i experience the same thing when burning my dvd rips to disc. the first cd won't play at all in any non linux system which sucks if i wanna take it to work and watch a movie on my break. the second disc usually works just fine.

sigh.

I just tried 1x burn...same thing

What do you mean by "the second disc usually works just fine."?

well i rip at the highest kbps and that results in the ripped movie being about 1300 + MB in size thus two cds when i burn the two parts on their respective discs (of course after making isos out of them) the second part plays just fine (both linux and windows) but the first part (disc 1) only plays in linux not windows. it is almost like the encription is getting copied or something, well thats all i can think of anyway. since part two does not have any of the initial encription headers leading it it plays just fine.

mind you this really seems like a strectch to me:)

thanks i will see what happens

heh, still working on this :)

I tried making an ISO first then burning that to CD...no go.
It has to be a bug in cdrecord, that is my only thought on this :(

what version of cdrecord are you using?

Icarus

Heh, it IS a new player in the car...that's what stinks the most about it. Maybe I'll try just making a CDA and see if those work (I've been trying mp3 CDs)

I've even sent an e-mail to JVC about this...been a month and haven't hear if they even got it ;)
