This MUST have been brought up before. I don't have a clue on how to install Debian. Tried searching LNO, but couldn't find it. I KNOW IT'S HERE!!! Anyone seen/remember the post? Basically, I'm looking to install Debian via FTP, so I can get all the latest files. I'm on cable, so bandwidth isn't a problem. I have a Slackware background (if that means anything).

I'm not sure what your problem is. Have you already tried to install Debian? If yes, did you encounter any specific problems? If no, go right ahead and try!

RTFM (http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/install.en.html) http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/tongue.gif , well it's a start.

i dont get why people say DEbian is so hard. I went from Rhat 6.2 -> 7.0 to Deb 2.2 (or .1) It was an easy install. I already had an idea of what i wanted and so could pick wisly (it is a long install if you look at each individual package to see if u want it). If you are a real newbie i can see how Debian install can be hard, but all u need to know: press tab to switch menus, up & down, and enter to choose something.

Hmm... I was used to installing from a CD. Pop the CD in, and boot. But I wanted to boot with a floppy and install via FTP. I don't have a clue. Honestly, I'm one to RTFM because I think/though that I could get more information from them, but I've been busy for the past few days. So, I thought I could get away from RTFM by grabbing an existing NHF or post here... http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

Well, installing from FTP starting with Floppies is not too hard. Start by downloading the Floppy images from ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/Debian2.2r2/main/disks-i386/current/images-1.44/ (you need rescue.bin, root.bin and driver-*.bin).

Write those images to Floppy disks using rawrite under Windows or dd under Linux. Before you proceed, make sure you know which kernel modules you need to get your Internet access working, i.e. nic drivers, ppp and such.

Once you have all your information, insert the Floppy disk with rescue.bin written to it and boot your PC. Basically, follow the instructions on the screen until you get to the point where it asks you to select your source of installation. Select FTP there. After that, the installation is the same as when using a CD, except that everything is being downloaded.

I've undertaken this procedure many times and have had no problem at all so far.
