Debian Sound

I know this question has been asked before, but I can't seem to find it in a search...

How do I add my user to the sound group to allow him (or her) to get sound?

I could be wrong (not the first time, I know!) but I thing the group is audio. You can do this at the command line like:
adduser usename audio

I think that is the group name.
"Think" is the operative word. :)
