I am running the VESA driver for my Radeon 8500LE because even though Redhat 8 is supposed to supprt the card, it does now. Anyway it's gonna require much work to get it running right but I have noticed that Xine is black and white only while Mplayer is full color. Also Xine has lines up and down the screen. I don't think it's the video driver, but does anyone have a clue (I like Xine better).

mplayer really is the better of the two (the best for linux actually). I'd suggest just getting used to mplayer. Xine is extremely buggy.

:D
I had a problem compiling xine,
you had a problem installing a mplayer binary?
:D
Linux is great, isn't it?
p.s.- out of all those prog's I compiled for my system, xine was the only one to sucessfully crash my system :-(

I like Mplayer fine except that you can't resize the video or fast forward at all. What I am looking for is basically a Windows Media Player replacement, and when I am playing videos, I want a nice gui, not some command line switches I have to use and remember. I don't think thats really too much to ask. Anyway it looks like Xine has more of the media player like features, I just can't figure why it doesn't work right.

If you check out "man mplayer" it'll give you the rundown on how to do all that stuff. It'd probably be best for you to just type "gmplayer".... that's the gui-frontend for it.
[~][12:13:03]> mplayer --help | less
Basic keys: (see the man page for the complete list, also check input.conf)
<- or -> seek backward/forward 10 seconds
up or down seek backward/forward 1 minute
pgup or pgdown seek backward/forward 10 minutes
< or > step backward/forward in playlist
p or SPACE pause movie (press any key to continue)
q or ESC stop playing and quit program
+ or - adjust audio delay by +/- 0.1 second
o cycle OSD mode: none / seekbar / seekbar+timer
* or / increase or decrease pcm volume
z or x adjust subtitle delay by +/- 0.1 second
r or t adjust subtitle position up/down, also see -vop expand
EDIT:
check out some screen shots here:

as for sizing?
I just dug this one up I saw a while ago:
"mplayer -osdlevel 0 -fs -rootwin -loop 0 filename.movie
That loads mplayer, doesn't display any ' on screen display', shows the video full screen, on the desktop background and loops it forever. Great to have running at startup if you've got a decent movie!"
DID YOU SAY MEDIA PLAYER?

Xine looks cool and those functions are nice, but I use mplayer because Xine has problem with some graphic cards. Well at least their F&A says it has problem with my graphic card (S3 Savage). Mplayer doesn't have that and works great.

OK here's a real pisser.....every time I use Gmplayer I get a fatal error "error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device" yet mplayer works fine? I think I am gonna start a new thread with this question as it isn't really a xine issue anymore.
