good reading guy's
has anyone considered FIPS, this'll allow you to back up the MBR while creating the Space needed for the linux install, yes it's old and somewhat fiddly, but if you want rid of Linux at at later date you can simply run restorrb and your back to square one.
If you use this then you will need to create a single partition with MS -DOS fdisk, Install XP, then run a bootable floppy with the FIPS and RESTORRB programs from the cdrom copied to it. Once running, fips will show the partition you have, resize the partition to what you need. When done fips will write to disk and will ask if you want to backup the MBR, say yes to this and your done. Put this floppy disk some where safe and label it. Next you need to re run MS-DOS fdisk and delete the partition you created with FIPS. Once this is done the space has been created for the Linux install. Simply boot up with the CDROM in the drive and make sure the BIOS is set to use this as the first boot option. When you get to the point of partitioning you should have the option to partition automatically, choose the option to leave the existing partitions and install to the free space and let the install do the partition thing for you.
If you ever want to remove the Linux install use the floppy disk with FIPS on it and run restorrb from the prompt, it will restore the MBR and youwill have no legacy boot loader problems.
This is a slightly long winded way to do the install and if you want to learn its not for the faint hearted.
As already posted modern disk managers is an alternative, depends on how much you want to learn I suppose.
As for your last post go with FAT32 for the time being, and yes linux will over write the mbr but the insatall give the option to boot to the windows OS, read carefully during the install, or you will end up having to do this manually. 7.3 gives a gui for booting linux or windoze, and if I remember there will be 2 listings for the linux option Linux and Linux1 the second is what you will need to choose. Also go for lilo as the boot loader.
Cheers sc00bie
