can i use the same swap partition for multiple distros, or does each one have to have it's own swap partition?

this is for multi-booting mind you: only one OS booted at one time.

No problem at all!! Only when you are using *BSD and linux you need to put a mkswap in your boot scripts 'cause they you different swap signatures.
Works great for me with 3xlinux + freeBSD sharing two swap partitions.
