I've got a compaq two-button wheel mouse that i can't get to work in RH8. Well, i can get it to work, but the scroll wheel won't work. I'v tried mouseconfig and the gui mouse config to no avail. Any ideas are appreciated...

Did you try the "Generic Wheel Mouse" from the GUI mouse config?

Heh, when I used a bad mouse driver sideways became first button and up became right click and down would double-click and the wheels would move the cursor :D
I'll check what I'm using when I get home tonight and maybe you can manually edit your /etc/X11/XFConfig file for it.

edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config and at the end of the mouse section add
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

Here's what my mouse section looks like
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"
EndSection
works great...

From my own experience, it *could* actually be your _video_ driver!!
I bought a Microtel Linux box (which "came" with Lindows). The Lindows wouldn't get past the initial X screen no matter what. I re-installed Lindows and got the same thing.
Installed Redhat 8.0 (clean, i.e. reformatted the drive) and had the exact same mouse problem you're describing. Tried every mouse option I could find and all the mouse ever did was park itself in the upper right corner of the screen.
The video had been autoprobed to VESA something or other. Just for fun, I Googled around looking for the proper driver for the Video card in the machine; eventually found one and after I set RH up for that video card the mouse magically started working!! Including the scroll wheel...
YMMV

This problem happened to me when trying to use the MS intellimouse drivers. All I did was restart X (Ctrl Shift Backspace) when the mouse pointer went mad. Its worked fine since.
Sorry if I have missed to point of your problem. I know very little.

I use a Logitech mouse but always find that the Intellimouse drivers work best (Same went for w$ndows when I used it). When I install I configure for the Intellimouse and get the same problem with response that you describe. For the rest of the install I just use the ta, enter, and arrow keys to navigate, then when I reboot at the end everything is accepted and it works fine. For the sake of a reboot it could be worth a try.
