Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Mandrake 7.2 to 8.0?
I was using Mandrake 7.2 months ago and then really haven't messed with it for awhile. I had purchase the retail version. I now see that 8.0 is out. Can I and where could I download the latest version? And what do I need to do? Do I install 7.2 and update it or just install 8.0? Sorry, I am a true newbie. Thx guys.

Your sure can download Mandrake 8.0.
here's a link for the 2 cd's: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/ftp.php3#iso
You'll need a cd burner to burn the iso's to disk of course, then you can just boot from your cd (if you have that option in your bios) or put the burned cd in windows and the autorun screen will have some option (to make boot disk, etc..)
The installer has an update option so you should be good to go

Mandrake 8.0 CD's are available for about $4 at www.cheapbytes.com (http://www.cheapbytes.com)
However, there are well know upgrade issues going from 7.2 to 8.0 (I ran into many of them myself)
I ended up having to overwrite my 7.2 installation to get any access to Linux at all.
One question though. Which one do I choose, the ISO image files or just the Mandrake 8.0? what is the differnce?

Why not wait another week for 8.1 ??
Really? Just another week? Maybe. I see you can buy the 2 cds or download them. What I don't understand is how you know which files and subdirectories to copy to which disk. I mean, there are like 12 files/folders, do you copy 6 to each disk or what?

Not sure how you do it like that. I myself just download the ISO's and burned them to CD and run it from there
Which ISO do you download? EXT or INST?

INST (installation) you do need and the EXT (extras ?) is optional.

I would recommend both ISOs as you would miss out on a lot of stuff by skipping the EXT CD.

I would certainly suggest waiting until 8.1 because of the upgrade problems when moving from 7.2 to 8.0. Also, a friend of a friend who works at Mandrake says to stay away from the Beta version of 8.1, wait until the final release comes out.
Thx for all the help guys
