I already have a linksys cable/dsl router, so I don't need to set the box up for that. Does anybody have any useful suggestions (yes I am keeping it). It has a 1 gig hd, but will more than likely be adding an 8 gig to it also.

Firewall, file server, small webserver, a pc for testing distros and learning how to screw the system up, not-so-dumb terminal, give it to me.
I'm doing all the programming at the console. Your PC is more than sufficient for this (if the program gets large this gives more time for coffee).

If it were me, I would use it as a web server. But I'd probably throw in an extra 32mb of ram for a total of 64mb.

two words:
Quake Server
(as in Quake 1 -- the ORIGNIAL and never quite duplicated classic)

Throw a Micro disto (Like Vector (http://metalab.unc.edu/vectorlinux)) and use it as a WordProcessing/ secondary box. Maybe even set it up as a print server/ file server. Or even use it as a test box for Apache or whatever. Make it a fax server. Email server, automated backup box. (backs up other computers on your network, through a cron job).

Or, if you live near I-35 between McAllen, TX and Cedar Rapids, IA, I can stop by and pick it up next week. :D

Well thank you for the suggestions guys. I think I will try to make it a test webserver/ftp server type thingy. And I don't see any problems in sending it to anybody if they wouldn't mind giving me their main machines :D

here (http://foldingathome.stanford.edu) is another thing you could do, just have it compute scientific stuff when it isn't busy doing the other stuff
