installing nameserver

how can I install & configure nameserver...and what does nameserver actually do..?
please tell me step by step cause i'm a newbie..

A nameserver is only usually needed if you need to handle a bunch of machines. Most of the functionality of a name server can be handles by a good /etc/hosts file that can be copied from machine to machine. Name servers usually are handy if you have a lot of machines to administer.
