I built a system a couple of month ago and I used an nVidia Motherboard which has an Ethernet adapter on board.
It worked fine in Windows but when I installed Mandrake 9.0 it would not recognize my connection and I could not connect to the net :( .
After doing some reading on-line I realized I had to install nVidia drivers and recompile the kernel. As a total n00b I had no idea how to do those things despite some fairly detailed explanations I read.
So instead of doing that I took the easy way out. I stopped at CompUSA and bought a very generic PCI network card, installed it in my computer and fired it up with the KNOPPIX CD.
Ethernet card was recognized immediately and I am writing this in Konqueror.
Moral of the story: if you want to avoid messing with nVidia drivers just spend $15 or less get a generic network card and you won't have to worry about it.
I know it's a bit of a cop out but at my level of understanding It's an acceptable compromise.
PS: what do you recommend I read at a very basic level that would give me a basic overview of Linux? I am looking for something that assumes that I know very little about Linux.
Cheers
