Up to now on the 3-disc download distros of Mandrake and Redhat, you only needed disc 1 and 2 for a regular installation. Disc 3 appeared to my inexperienced eyes to be a lot of development files and beta files that I wouldn't need.
So what's on five discs of RedHat 8.0, and what do I need for a basic newbie websurfer installation?

What does their website say is on the other discs?
Just 1 & 2 discs should do to get on the net.

As I recall, one is documentation (the same as the pubs shipped in the box), and the other contains soho tools, mostly "lite" versions of Linux office software.
They can be easily installed graphically using the RPM manager, but why? I don't clutter my hard drive with unneeded documentation, and lite versions of software are worthless.
Especially stay away from the Kerio webmail application, as installing it will prevent you from running the Apache Web Server (they don't tell you that during install).

RedHats website says you need disks 1-3 tho is that not true? Downloading it now and that would save me a hell of alot of time.

I'm guilty of not having read the fine print, just going on past experience. If RedHat says you need the first three, I'd trust that. I was asking because I'm downloading it on a dialup. Stop laughing.

CDs 1-3 are all you need. The remainder are documentation, source code, and free lite apps.

Thanks for the information, everyone. Wish there were more info on the websites at Mandrake and RedHat about this. It would save us downloading time and make for less traffic and congestion at the mirror sites.

You only need 1 and 2, and SOMETIMES 3... it depends on which packages you decide to install.

Think about what it's like downloading them on a dialup -- about 40 hours per disc.
