I just found this system at Tiger Direct. It's a 1.3GHz Duron for only $230! Has anyone bought one or used one? I've been looking for an ultra-cheap system to learn Linux on. It ships with Lindows installed but it should work with any distro.
Here's the link. (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?sku=N52-1064%20P)

Looks really nice, I'll buy one if you tell me how it is, I'll just need to get a NIC card and a better graphics card... they don't really tell what hardware is in there..

Several Lindows Insiders bought this box, and they said there is NIC on the MB. I wouldn't count on it, but wait till the box arrives to order the NIC!
BTW, maybe you can wait a bit until 3.0 comes out (in "mid-November").

I think they plan on installing Linux on it though.

Also, LindowsOS IS Debian Linux, so you can learn about Linux from it...
If you want it REALLY cheap, you can get a $199 PC with LindowsOS at Walmart:
$199 Lindows PC at WalMart (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=1957333&cat=96356&type=19&dept=3944&path=0%3A3944%3A3951%3A41937%3A86796%3A96356)

Debian, permanently running wine, less unstable, and is closed-source not open...

The other Linux box you seem to be getting your money's worth, it appears to have faster hardware...

They include on that page a comparison of the walmart machine and theirs
They also have some pretty nice real barebone systems which depending on how much you can get the other parts for could be cheaper than the complete ones

That WINE thing is true to the current version to the PC, but not true to the current version I'm getting...
Of course, he can always delete LindowsOS, but some people has bought the PC, was thinking of deleting it, but found out that it was so easy to use, they signed up as an insider.
The TigerDirect PC has a better deal.

If you look at the link it does say onboard 10/100 ethernet. so it has a nic on the mb. Also as far as the video goes it's onboard sis 730 which is not bad, but doesn't have any 3d accell in linux that I'm aware of.

Personal opinion of course, but I've bot through Tiger and would much rather work with someone who understands computers than a typical W-mart type. Thanks for the link - I've been looking for a similar system to "play" with Linux before abandoning Microsloth and XP.

The only thing ANY of these places understand is how to sell products .
Shop for price and customer satisfaction . You want to buy hardware from them , not have their baby .

I think the Tiger Direct system is a better deal than the Wal-Mart one. The Wal-Mart system only has an 800MHz VIA C3 processor and doesn't even have an AGP slot for a graphics card.

Here ya go . It can be upgraded later and instead of a 1 yr warranty you get 3 years on your HD and lifetime on the memory .
Im not saying the others are a bad deal but there is a raeson why they are so cheap .

That was off the top of my head. It took about 5 minutes to work up the order . Im sure if you looked around you could meet or beat the price of those pre-assembled computers .
