When I opened home directory in kde, and tried to drag a file around, it spilled black color and even froze. BigCletus 09-20-2001, 12:47 AM i have had the same problem on a box at school with 7.1 . When ever you try to drag anything in kde, the area turns black. Never found a fix though, if you do let me know. Malakin 09-20-2001, 01:16 AM video related possibly. What video card are you using and what drivers? error27 09-20-2001, 03:20 AM By froze do you mean that you couldn't even telnet/ssh to the machine? What version of X are you using? use xdpyinfo to find that out if you aren't sure. also what malakin said. error27 09-20-2001, 03:21 AM can you get to a terminal after it freezes by typing ctrl-alt-f1 ? bluesky 09-20-2001, 09:58 AM It only happened to one machine; the other machine with the same copy of redhat 7.1 and worked great. The symptoms was exactly like BigCletus described. It is definitely related to dragging. And if I tried to drag more, the machine would freeze to the point I had to reinstall linux. If I logout then login again(ctl-alt-delete) then everything turned back normally. I was able to work everything else normally, apparently all except DRAGGING. Could be due to video, but I have no clear idea. The video is AGP 4mb extended to 8mb and became SiS. On the same machine, I had ran redhat 6.1 with no problem. Although 6.1 only recognized 4mb of video (AGP). I haven't used telnet But I could surf the internet fine through dsl. Note: I have updated all errata posted at the redhat website. How to turn off "drag and drop" in kde? [ 20 September 2001: Message edited by: bluesky ] Okie 09-20-2001, 11:59 AM it must me a video problem, i am using the exact same thing, Redhat 7.1 but i have a 3dfx Voodoo 3 3000 and i can drag & drop icons on the desktop with no problems... i have noticed if i want to delete the cache in Mozilla i can delete the cache folder with no problems, but if i open the cache folder and try to delete all the contents it will totally trash my OS and require a reinstall, even fsck wont fix it, but like i said of i don't open the cache folder and simply delete the cache folder it works just fine and the next time i launch Mozilla it will automatically create a new one... the delete cache button in preferences does not empty the cache is the reason i do it that way... bluesky 09-20-2001, 09:35 PM I test with GNOME. Ant in GNOME it is quite safe to drag and drop!!! So the problem may still related to video, it only affected KDE. justlinux.com
