How the hek do I make my Mandrake 7.2 system use XFree 4.01 instead of 3.3.6??? I know there is probably a very simple answer but the docs have 'yet again' failed in making their point clear.
During the installation of Mandrake 7.2, when I get to the configuring of X portion, I am told this by the install program:
1. That my video card is capable of 3D acceleration.
2. That only XFree 3.3.6 supports 3D acceleration.
3. That XFree 4.01 supports my video card (but no 3D acceleration) and that I would have better 2D acceleration than in 3.3.6.
That's all find and dandy but here are the choices that are then given to me:
1. XFree 3.3.6 w/3D Acceleration
2. XFree 3.3.6
Can someone explain this to me? I've done searches in forums and via google for 'xfree mandrake' and have found zilch regarding this issue.
A very big thanks in advance for help on this.

heya.. sorry I can't be my help, i can only ask, what video card do you have. I installed 7.2, and it went through the same Spiel over my ATI Rage Mobility Pro, but when the buttons came up for me, 4.0.1 and 3.3.6 were the choices. It only said 3.3.6, nothing about 3D acceleration on the actual button, i just assumed that was implied because of the preceding paragraph they give you. I wonder if the button just messed up.
has this happened more than once?
course, i'm sure you could d/l and install 4.0.1 seperatly, but i'm FAR too newbie to tell you how to down that.

Hi,
I'm using an STB Velocity 4400... read that as NVidia TNT.
It's happened every time I have installed Mandrake 7.2. I use to think it was a bug, too... the button text just being incorrect... but later I found that's not the case. 3.3.6 is the XFree that's being used.
I have a sneaky suspicion that Mandrake 7.2 does not include any NVidia drivers for XFree 4.01.
This would make sense... Yes, XFree 4.0.1 supports my video card... but I can't use it because I don't have a driver for it. If that's true, I wish the installer could have told me in a better way!
I'm a newbie myself so somebody please tell me that I wrong!!! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/confused.gif

I'm not sure what's happening.....I have a Diamond Monster Fusion (Voodoo Banshee) card and my choices are Xfree 3.3.6, XFree 4.0.1, and Xfree 4.0.1 w/3D Accel. My card has been around for about 2 or 3 years now so that may have something to do with it (older technology). This has been the only thing stopping me from purchasing a new 3D card. But, I'm sure the drivers are out there somewhere.

In Mandrake 7.1 you had to do an expert install to use the 4.0 drivers. I assume 7.2 is the same way.
You might try to reinstall and chose expert, update, and just not install any packages, only configure X. That may save you a full reinstall or it may not.
In DrakConf there is a live update. You probably can do it from there.

Hi there,
I did an expert install and it worked!
XFree 4.01 is now running... http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
Afterwards, I updated to KDE 2.0.1 and then installed the latest NVidia drivers and all is well.
Thanks much for the help.
