i have a linux router/firewall that my sister and i get access to the internet from. I need to make a proxy server or something on the main computer that will block "bad sites" that my sister frequently visits. If i don't make it filter her sites, then i get my internet taken away, and i can't live without internet...

I was thinking of a windows program i once downloaded that filtered stuff by making your localhost a proxy server.. i was thinking perhaps squid would filter sites out or something? I just want to filter out pornography... she seems to like looking at that, and she's real young...

Please help

um, can you add a rule to your set of ip chains? like
/sbin/ipchains -A intput -s one.bad.ip.number/32 -j DENY -l
/sbin/ipchains -A output -s one.bad.ip.number/32 -j DENY -l

although you may not want to log anything...

well, i need to block a LOT of sites, but i need it to be in a proxy (or some other way that would work like this http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif there's more than one computer on the network, and some sites they might need to see... not specifically porn, but like if something has something bad on it, i need for anyone going through the proxy not to see it, but anyone else can...

there are some sites that are appropriate for older people, that just aren't for 14 year olds....

This is a tough problem.

Major corporations even struggle with this.

Any list or keyword you use today will obsolete tomorrow. My company pays for a service to try and keep up with it.

Logging all sites visited may be the best approach. Sort the list by machine or username and review it with the teenager weekly. If they know, you know, every site they visit they may think twice.

No internet access in bedrooms, only in the main living area. Restrict the times to when supervision is available.

You will not find an easy solution to this.

Good luck,

how would i log her sites? i've been going over to her computer, and going to her history, but she's been deleting the sites she went to... but i saw that she was looking at porn several times...
if i had proof, then i could show it to her, and let her know that i know what she's doing

Maybe someone more familar with Firewalls on Linux could help.

I have to believe that you can log the traffic on the router/firewall box. That way it won't matter what she does on her box you'll still have the log.

This means you'll be "Big Brother" in the truest sense. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

Good luck,
