Not to be a putz, but I can't help it. Look how many easy to solve questions we have on LNO.
Question number one for today... Why are modutils (a vital part of the current kernels included separately?
More to follow... ;)

Modules are kernel features which you can load/unload at will.

why ":wq" instead of ":x"?

Because someone decided that the W and Q keys were underused. So they decided to program them into vi as one of the most used key combinations, to balance out the key usage statistics ;)

Um...I guess I meant to ask why modutils, and other supporting software isn't packed together with the kernel. Granted, there are two different groups of people working on them, but if one requires the other, why are users left out in the cold when all they want to do us upgrade to the newest bestest kernel?
Seems like it wouldn't bee too hard for the kernel and modutils people to package each with their personal favorites, as long as they require them anyway.
Next dumb question when I get as much as a feeble answer on this one... :)

What is the problem? You should download the kernel and read the documentation to see what you need and where to get it.

Not a problem, as much as an inconvinience (my spelling is terrible, sorry). Why not make it a one stop shopping type of thing. Download the new kernel and all supporting software at once, untar/install it in one easy step, restart your box, after you make adjustments for your boot configuration, and be done with it!
And, for the record, I like many people, am lazy! :)
