First, i woul like to say that I LOVE LINUX. It rocks! Now that i got that off my chest, i have a problem.
I use Mandrake 9.0, w/ kernal version 2.419-16mdk. Now, i downloaded OpenOffice.org and intalled it using the GUI installation. Terminal installation is not at my level yet. Now i started OpenOffice, and started it up. I began to type and spell checked my work. It said i had no errors. I knew that i had mispelled words. The whole underlining this do not work either. I've check out where it looks for the .dic file. And there seems to be a file there, but the file is blank. I looked at the file in kwrite. Do i need to download a .dic file? Or is there some stupid little thing that i have just over looked like the newbie i am? Any help that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am having the same problem. i did a full install, fired up the openoffice word processor, and have been disappointed by a non-working spellchecker. i find it interesting that the thesaurus and the hyphen checkers work, but not he spellchecker. if anyone has any ideas, let me know.

The spell checker works just fine for me in RedHat 8.0, using OpenOffice that came with it.

are you talking about autocorrect? go to tools > spellcheck > autocheck.

I struggled with this for a long time, took me about three days on and off but I got it in the end.
MDK comes with at least three differnet spell checking apps, I guess they are used by differnt things. Make sure that you install Myspell as this is the one that is used by OO.
Also check that you've got the right language package installed as well and then open OO.
Go to view - options and check that you've got the right settings under the 'Language Settings' section.
Hope this helps.

I'm having the same problem...myspell is installed, but still no checkie-checkie
I got it to work by installing one spellchecker or the other... MySpell should work - you can't just install it and expect it to work, you have to select it in OO preferences.

I have found two reasons for spell check not to work on my limited experience of installing OO on two Linux machines:
1. By default for some reason spellcheck was turned off. Could revive checking by suitable selection of option
2. I chose English UK as the default language - apparently OO does not have English UK distionary (yet). So changed back to the default US English setting.
HTH, Best Wishes to All.

I discovered this on the OOo site today - maybe it clarifies some things but most importantly for me, I now have en_GB spellchecking working on OOo.

Hmmm... I even followed the directions on the Open Office site, and still can't get mine to function correctly. Any suggestions?

Ah, nevermind, I'll just tell Open Office that I'm Canadian. That seems to work.
