I am new too Linux I have Redhat8.0 and I am afraid of changeing or adding onto command lines anyway I am useing a external comport Zoom56k dualmode model#2949L lucent chipset.when I went into the menu I chose create an internet connection then a balloon popsup says No modem found on your system from their I continude the system created a generic modem for me so I applyed it when I tested the config another baloon popup said Activating network device pppo,please wait........after that nothing happens I checked the modem agian says inactive.......please help........do I have a winmodem I dont want Too have to buy a new modem allso im haveing a bad day my primary harddrive crashed so no more winnt2000 for me till I get another harddrive which was a 40gig maxtor only 1year old and it died console mode couldn't even repair it with scdsk......
