If you use debian and want to do a clean upgrade to kernel 2.4 you can make your own deb http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif if you don't know how post here and I'll explain. you will need to make sure you have AND kernel-package
apt-get install bin86 kernel-package
the kernel package has stepby step instructions to make the deb
I just didit last night and its worked great. also make kernel header deb http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
hope this helps any debian users who didn't know this

Cool, I didn't... I might give this a shot (or at least add it to my ~/stuff-to-do file for some time in the future). Of course, I've now got you marked down as my point of contact (read: guy to be bugged) when I can't get it working http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Yeah, I've used this a few times. Definitely makes it more simple. I personally stopped using it because I feel safer and more in control doing it myself.

Once again Debian has shown us the one true way. This is really a very easy way to do it. Just a hint you may use xconfig. I do. But drop back out to console before you compile the kernel it is *much* faster that way.

well your still "doing it yourself" this way, the end result is just a deb and because its a deb its a cleaner more organized way to install a kernel

Does it handle module installation too? Lilo config?

sure does http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
you configthe kernel as you would normally
thenrun a few special commandsand it will prompt you at the end to make a boot disk and configure lilo. modules are loaded if they are chosen
